De retour des sports d'hiver, Reggie Lampert, en instance de divorce, retrouve son appartement parisien sens dessus-dessous et apprend la mort de son mari. L'inspecteur Grandpierre lui explique que son époux avait détourné pendant la guerre un magot destiné à la Résistance française. Ses anciens complices ont dû vraisemblablement l'abattre, voyant qu'il voulait profiter seul du trésor. Suspectée par ces derniers, Reggie ne sait plus où donner de la tête. Même Peter Joshua, un séduisant célibataire rencontré aux sports d'hiver, près duquel elle cherchait un appui, semble impliqué dans cette affaire.
