En 1954, Alfonso, un niño de 11 años pierde repentinamente a su madre quedando solo en una humilde y vieja casa de barro. Para sobrevivir, empieza a trabajar como "mandadero" en la única botica del pueblo. Allí, comienza a descubrir el mundo de la farmacéutica ayudando a algunas personas, pues el boticario está consumido por el alcohol. Alfonso descubre así su amor por la medicina.
